Samal Vimukthi Hemachandra (POLS ’16, Sri Lanka)

October 1, 2015

Samal is studying at CEU this year thanks to the supporters of the Alumni Scholarship, next|generation

In his own words:

I hold an MA in Philosophy and Contemporary Critical Theory from Kingston University, London, and a BA in History from the University of Colombo Sri Lanka.

Since childhood, I have been very politically aware and my Marxist family background has always encouraged me to look at mainstream Sri Lankan politics radically. As a politically-active student, I’ve organized symposiums, film screenings and discussions.

A new trend of state violence and racism has emerged in Sri Lanka and I have played an active part against it. I have campaigned for justice for a woman and her children after the forceful abduction of her husband by a state-sponsored militia. I am also a member of Aluth Parapura, which fights against racism and communal violence.

I’m excited to be a member of politically-vibrant CEU, which will help develop my intellectual and activist life. I’m grateful to the alumni whose support allows me to study at CEU.
